Tom Fun Orchestra

Tom Fun Orchestra es otro colectivo pero de Sydney, Nova Scotia. Si en la entrada anterior el distintivo del grupo era un estilo como de coro de iglesia el de esta banda es como de una cantina llena de amigos y todo bebiendo run y tequila. La banda contiene una mezcla de instrumentos electricos y acusticos que incluyen desde el violin, el banjo y el acordeon hasta guitarras electricas,baterias y sampleos.

El sonido es similar, mas no igual a bandas como the Clash, the Pogues y a the Arcade Fire y Broken social Scene pero quizas la mayor similitud es con Tom Waits ya que la voz de Ian MacDougall (el vocalista y escritor) tiene similitud con la de Waits.

La banda fue formada en el 2005 por el mismo Ian y durante un tiempo estuvieron actuando en diferentes partes de su natal Nova Scotia y despues se embarcaron en una gira por Irlanda y el Reino Unido, su album debut titulado You Will Land with a Thud fue grabado con Gordon Gano quien es el vocalista y guitarrista del legendario grupo Violent Femmes por lo cual le dio una calidad y sello unico. Para el 2008, año en que salio su disco debut la banda gano premios en los 2008 Music Nova Scotia Awards por mejor Entertainer of the Year y Galaxy Rising Star que en si seria traducido como mejor show en vivo y artista nuevo.

Y si. La parte divertida es cuando se ven a estas 9 personas en el escenario cantando y divirtiendose como si estuvieran en alguna cantina o en alguna fiesta. Recordando al viejo Tom, y no me refiero a Tom Waits sino a la persona por la cual tienen este nombre y si uds. quieren saber de que me refiero tendran que esuchar el disco y quizas visitar la pagina oficial de este interesente grupo.

The Tom Fun Orchestra is an indie rock ensemble from Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. The band features an unconventional mix of electric and acoustic instruments, including violin, banjo, accordion, trumpet, double bass, electric guitars and drums. With a sound that has elicited references ranging from The Clash, Tom Waits and The Pogues to The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, The Tom Fun Orchestra combines elements of folk, roots, blues, rock and punk to create a sound that is at once familiar yet entirely unique .

The Tom Fun Orchestra was formed in 2005 by singer-songwriter Ian MacDougall. They have performed all over Central and Eastern Canada and toured throughout Ireland and the UK. The band recorded their debut album, You Will Land with a Thud, with Violent Femmes singer-guitarist Gordon Gano and record producer Warren Bruleigh. It was mixed by Phil Palazzola and mastered by Howie Weinberg and released January 29, 2008 on Company House Records (EMI Music Canada). At the 2008 Music Nova Scotia Awards, The Tom Fun Orchestra won awards for Entertainer of the Year and Galaxy Rising Star. In March, 2009, the band received its first East Coast Music Award with the ECMA Galaxy Rising Star Award.

The Fun part is when you see this 9 people on stage, having fun if like they were in some pub or a party remember their good old friend Tom, and Im not talking about Tom Waits, I´m talkin about the person from who their took their band name, and if you want to know who is he, you´ll have to listen the record and probably gives them a visit the official Webpage of this amazing band.

Después de un rato de descanso, regresamos con una nueva tanda de discos, en esta ocasión nos enfocaremos en algo que es característico de los canadienses y es la formación de colectivos o de agrupaciones con un alto numero de integrantes, existen varias pero hoy les traigo a The Choir Practice originarios de Vancouver.

El grupo es formado originalmente por Coco Culbertson miembro de The Gay y por Shane Turner quien es a su vez miembro de Love and Mathematics los demás integrantes son Larissa Loyva (P:ano y de su proyecto en solitario Kellarissa), Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida y The Buttless Chap), Jenn Chycoski, Chris Kelly, Skat-T, Karin Bubas, Shira Blustein (Blood Meridian), Sidney Vermont (Hello Blue Roses), Naomi Nepham, Marcy Emery (Heartbreaker Scene), Kurt Dahle (Limblifter y The New Pornographers), Olivia Fetherstonghaugh y Kristen Halliday. Cada uno de ellos pone una parte a esta agrupación. El estilo es pop pero con un estilo coral (de ahí el nombre) y tal cual parece como si escucharas un coro de iglesia, de hecho la idea y fue originalmente formado como una excusa para beber vino y juntarse con los amigos.

Ellos lanzaron su álbum debut con Mint Records (de donde son la mayoría de los grupos de los integrantes) el 15 de Mayo del 2007 y atrajeron buena parte de los medios cuando Jarvis Cocker los eligió para que abrieran su fecha en Vancouver.

El Album incluye una versión de Failsafe de Carl Newman (The New Pornographers y A.C. Newman) la cual fue grabada y lanzada muchos meses antes que Carl lanzara su versión en el álbum Challengers de The New Pornographers, entonces si mucho preámbulo aquí les dejo esta joya o en su defecto joyas de músicos.

Faunts es una banda de indie rock de Edmonton, formados en el 2000 por los hermanos Steve y Tim Batke. En el 2005 despues de estar en el ambito indie local de Alberta firman con Friendly Fire Records y en el 2005 sale su album debut High Expectations/Low Results que fue bien recibido. Un año despues lanzan un EP de 40 min. titulado M4, de ese mismo EP una cancion fue incluida en el juego RPG Mass Effect y gracias a esto la popularidad de la banda se incremento y una nueva audiencia conocio el mood, y las melodias de la banda.

Despues de sacar un disco de Remixes en febrero del 2009 sale su nuevo album titulado Feel.Love.Thinking.Of el cual fue resultado de estar de gira por Estados Unidos, actualmente se encuentra de gira nuevamente por Estados Unidos y parte de Canada.

Faunts is an Indie rock band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, formed in the fall of 2000 by two brothers, Steve and Tim Batke. Faunts are released on Friendly Fire Recordings. After their released of a remix album titled Faunts Remixed, their new album Feel.Love.Thinking.Of was released on February 17th, 2009, and is the result of songwriting over the course of the touring across America and Canada and they are on tour again.

Said the Whale es una banda indie sin los condimentos indie. No ironia, no pose hipsters (segun ellos en su myspace) pero la musica es inteligente y bien pensada y sobretodo artistica y con alma. ellos son originarios de Vancouver, y como tambien mencionan son el sonido de una ciudad que se encuentra perpetuamente en cielos grises y montañas con nieve en la cima. Son el sonido de estar atrapado en el agua. Son el sonido de tener veinte-tantos años y ser libre y descorazonado. Son los sonidos de esa ciudad tan hermosa y natural. Said the Whale es una parte Brian Wilson, una parte Nick Cave y pedazos de The Shins y The Decemberists. Osea son sus influencias no los miembros de la banda.

Su album debut se titula Takin Abalonia el cual fue lanzado en el 2007. Despues de eso fue re-lanzado el 3 de junio con siete nuevas canciones y re-bautizaron el album con el nombre: Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia.

Tambien tienen dos EP que estan para descargarse en su pagina oficial.Ellos son una joven banda dirigiendose al mundo con un sonido de su pueblo.

Said the Whale is an indie band without the indie baggage. Said The Whale No irony, no hipster posing (as they said in their myspace) but their music is witty and smart and artful and soulful. They are the sound of Vancouver's perpetually grey skies and snow topped mountains and the Lions Gate Bridge. The sound of being trapped by water on three sides and the Coastal Range on the fourth. The sound of being twenty-something and free and heartbroken. They are the sounds of a beatiful and calm city. Said The Whale is one-part Brian Wilson, one-part Nick Cave, a dash of the Shins, sprinkled with the Decemberists.

Their debut album Taking Abalonia was released in 2007. It was re-released on June 3, 2008 in Canada with seven new songs under the new name Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia.

Un cambio radical este día, con un poco de surf-rock. les hablo de un grupo que desde que leí de ellos me interese en escucharlos y busque sus discos en muchos lados hasta que los encontré y la verdad era lo que yo espera. Canciones que podrían ser el soundtrack de un western moderno, hablo de la música de The Rambling Ambassadors directos de Calgary.

Los Ambassadors fueron formados con un reto, cuando el promotor local del lugar reto al guitarrista Brent J. Cooper (de otro grupo de Surf canadiense llamado Huevos Rancheros y que eran toda una leyenda en Calgary) a llenar un lugar en una fecha que se aproximaba. Brent reunió al Bajista Scott Nickless y al baterista Tyler Pickering para completar el Line-up de su banda. Con unas pocas semanas los Ambassadors estuvieron tocando con importantes bandas del estilo musical y después preparandose para un álbum. Su álbum debut Avanti.

El disco que les subo es Vista Cruiser Country Squire que se posiciona firmemente entre un "Psychobilly fenomenal" y "Erase una vez en el Oeste" así como lo leen. Es un álbum con sonidos vintage que hacen que sea genial y novedosa. Especialmente por un genero que no es tan común en el país de la hoja de mapple.

Escuchenlos! les aseguro que estarán bailando desde el primer track.

A radical change this day, now with a little of surf-rock. Since the first moment I read about them i interested in heard them and I search for their albums and when I found it, it really amazed me. Songs that could be from a modern western soundtrack, im talkin about the music of Calgary´s The Rambling Ambassadors.

The Ramblin’ Ambassadors were formed on a dare when a local promoter challenged guitarist Brent J. Cooper (of surf-punkers Huevos Rancheros) to fill an upcoming opening slot. Brent recruited bassist Scott Nickless and drummer Tyler Pickering to complete the line-up. Within a few weeks, the Ambassadors were playing with another importants bands and then, they began to prepare for Avanti, their debut album.

The album that I upload is Vista Cruiser Country Squire lands firmly between "Psychobilly Freakout" and "Once Upon a Time In the West." Yeap. Thats right. Is an album with vintage sounds that make it to be great and fresh. Especially coming from a country where that kind of genre is not usual. Listen them! I bet you that you´ll be dancing since the first track.

Así como los sorprendentes Comeback kid y sus amigos Alexisonfire, esta es una de mis bandas de hardcore favoritas, ellos son Cancer Bats. Usualmente se refieren a ellos como una banda de hardcore, metalcore, death punk y heavy metal, tambien mencionan que tienen influencias de Stoner rock, Metal sureño, sludge metal y un poco de groove metal.

Originalmente la banda fue formada en Mayo del 2004, con el cantante Liam Cormier y el guitarrista Scott Middleton, quien era miembro de la banda de heavy metal de Toronto At the mercy of inspiration. Los dos querían formar un proyecto que combinara sus partes favoritas de bandas como Refused, Black Flag, Led Zeppelin y Down ademas de otras. Referente a los nombres para la banda ambos consideraban las propuestas de Cancer Bats y Pneumonia Hawk despues de decidir que la combinación de una enfermedad y un animal darian un buen nombre (quizás son amigos de AIDS wolf otra banda canadiense)

El 2 de Junio del 2006 salio su primer album titulado Birthing the Giant, el cual salió con una disquera pues Mayor. el álbum incluye vocales invitadas de George Pettit de Alexisonfire. Despues de eso la banda lanzo su segundo álbum, Hail Destroyer en Abril del 2008. El álbum ahora contiene vocales invitadas de Wade Macneil de Alexisonfire y Black Lungs, las de McIrath de Rise Against y de Benjamin Kowalewicz de Billy Talent.

La banda es fuerte y directa nada que ver con otras bandas que circulan hoy en día, no por nada la prestigiada revista Kerrang! le dio la calificación de KKKKK la mayor que da en sus reseñas a su disco Hail Destroyer y también la misma calificacion a su tour en UK. Ademas también la banda fue nominada para album del año 2008 en los premios Kerrang! de ese mismo año. El álbum que subimos es el mas reciente; Hail Destroyer! luego subiremos el anterior a este mismo.

Like the amazing Comeback Kid and their friends Alexisonfire, This is one of my favorite hardcore bands ever, the band is Cancer Bats. They are usually referred to as a hardcore, metalcore, death punk and heavy metal band, and have also been referred to as having influences from stoner rock, southern metal, sludge metal and groove metal.

Cancer Bats originated in May 2004 with singer Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton, former member of Toronto heavy metal band At The Mercy Of Inspiration.The two wanted to form a project that combined their favorite parts of bands like Refused, Black Flag, Led Zeppelin and Down, among others. On June 2, 2006. Birthing The Giant their first album was released into major record stores. The album includes guest vocals by George Pettit of Alexisonfire. After that, the band released their second studio album called Hail Destroyer on April 22, 2008. The album features guest vocals by Wade MacNeil of Alexisonfire and Black Lungs, McIlrath of Rise Against and Benjamin Kowalewicz of Billy Talent.

The band is hard and direct, not even close with anothers bands today. The magazine Kerrang! gave their album Hail Destroyer a KKKKK review (highest possible) as well as a 5k Live review on their headlining UK tour. Cancer Bats were also nominated for 2008 Album of the Year for the 2008 Kerrang! awards. The Album that we Upload is their new one; Hail Destroyer! Later we´ll upload the first one.

Fucked Up – The Chemistry Of Common Life

NOTA DEL DIA

El día llego, el pasado Martes fueron revelados los 10 nominados principales a los Polaris Music Prize, la lista muestra algunas pequeñas sorpresas, siendo la mas grande la de Hey Rosetta! tambien Patrick Watson vuelve a estar dentro de la lista, Fucked Up tambien logro entrar en la competencia junto a Great Lake Swimmers y Chad VanGaalen, lo interesante es que estos 5 grupos los subimos al blog. 5 de los 10, nada mal.

Ahora subiremos una variedad de grupos que no son necesariamente nuevos pero si son excelentes, despues subiremos los restantes artistas de la short list y poco a poco los que nos faltaron de la long list. Por lo pronto aqui la lista y despues el grupo de este dia.

Music Prize, the list shows some surprises, the biggest one, is Hey Rosetta! Who has been nominate, also Patrick Watson who once again is in the list, also Fucked up, Great Lake Swimmers and Chad VanGaalen, the interesting part is that this 5 artist I already uploaded to the blog. 5 from 10, not bad, is it?

Now I´ll upload a variety of bands that are not very new but are excellent, after that we uploaded the rest of the short list and after that the bands from the long list. Well here is the list and the band of the day.

Esta ocasion presento uno de los grupos que me recomendo mi querida sobrina rosines, y mas que grupo es un artista con un proyecto bastante complejo; Aidan Girt que da vida al proyecto de musica electronica experimental 1-Speed Bike.

Aidan era el baterista de Godspeed You! Black Emperor y de Exhaust. Quien ahora tiene el proyecto 1-speed bike con el cual ha sacado varios discos, quizas el mas importante a la fecha es el que grabo con la disquera Constellation Records titulado Droppy Butt Begone! el que cual alterna techno con un poco de hip como se escucha en el track que inicia, el album muestra cosas interesantes con el remix que hace de una cancion de Fly Pan Am (que se encontraban simultaneamente haciendo su nuevo EP en aquel entonces, el remix pasa al corazon del disco; beats y loops lentos que flotan alrededor y crean una paleta de figuras melodicas y timbres harmonicos.En pocas palabras es un mezcla de sampleos extraños que forman un buen experimento sonoro.

In this occasion I introduce you one of bands that my little nephew -rosines- recommend me, more than a group is just a guy with a complex project; Aidan Girt who is the mastermind behind 1-Speed Bike project.

1-speed bike is the electro alter-ego of Aidan girt, drummer for the montréal-based bands exhaust and godspeed you! black emperor, now he has this project with many releases but probably the most successful is the one that recorded with Constellation Records; Droopy Butt Begone! has a mix of techno with some hip hop sounds that are in track 1. The album shows interesting stuff like the remix of a song of Fly Pan Am, then comes the heart of the album; slow loops and beats, that floats around and create a mix of melodic figures and harmonic tunes. In a few words is mixture of strange samples that form an excellent experiment.

Antes que nada ya solo falta un día para conocer la short list de los nominados a los Polaris Music Prize despues de eso será esperar hasta septiembre para conocer al ganador. Aquí en el blog después de eso ya nos dedicaremos a poner a diferentes artistas y géneros. Algunos me los han recomendando y por eso les agradezco a todos uds. lectores de este blog.

En esta ocasión otro giro radical a los géneros y de un folk nos pasamos al Hip Hop directo de Toronto, Ontario el artista es K-os y su álbum Yes! del 2009. El alias K-os se pronuncia Caos y es un acrónimo para "Conocimiento por uno mismo" (Knowledge of Self) aunque en entrevistas posteriores ha dicho que también solía significar "El Sonido Original de Kheaven" - El verdadero nombre de k-os es Kheaven-. Inspirado por Michael Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatles, The Roots y Stevie Wonder, su música incorpora una gran variedad de generos musicales nunca limitando solo al rap sino también el funk, el rock y el reggae. Sus letras siempre frecuentan enfocarse en "un mensaje positivo" que aveces expresa una critica hacia la obsesión de la cultura hip hop mainstrean por el dinero, la fama y la glorificación de la violencia.

Lo mejor es que k-os no solo se dedica a cantar sino que el en ocasiones toca la guitarra el piano ya sea tanto en el estudio como en actos en vivo. En abril del 2009 empezó el Karma Tour alrededor de Canadá. Lo mas interesante es que para la gira, no hubo venta de boletos. Simplemente se les pedía a los fans que donara lo que ellos consideraban que valía el show, y lo hacían al dejar el venue.

Yes! es el cuarto álbum de k-os y realmente es una joya con canciones bastante buena e invitados de calidad como en Uptown Girl que cuenta con vocales invitadas de Emily Haines de Metric y Murray Lightburn de The Dears, el disco es una muestra de la buena calidad canadiense en cuanto a hip hop se refiere.

Just one more day to know the short list for the nominees of the Polaris Music Prize after that they will reveal not only the 10 nominated albums but also details of the award gala happening Sept. 21. Well in this occasion we make another turn and now we move to Hip Hop, right from Toronto, Ontario. K-os is his name, and the album is Yes!. The alias "k-os" (spelled with a lower case "k"), is pronounced "chaos" and is an acronym for "Knowledge of Self" although in a later interview he also said that it used to stand for "Kheaven's Original Sound." Inspired by Michael Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatles, The Roots and Stevie Wonder his music incorporates a wide variety of music genres including but not limited to rap, funk, rock, and reggae. His lyrics frequently focus on promoting a "positive message" while at times expressing criticism of mainstream hip hop culture's obsession with money, fame and glorification of violence.

The spectacular about k-os is that he does not only sing, he sometimes plays guitar and keyboard both during live performances and in the studio.In April 2009, k-os began the groundbreaking Karma Tour across Canada. For this tour, no advance tickets are sold. Fans are simply asked to donate what they think the show was worth as they leave the venue.

Yes! is the fourth album and really is fabulous with songs with a great quality and with special guests like Emily Haines from Metric and Murray Lightburn from the dears in the track Uptown Girl and Saukrates and Nelly Furtado on I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman. Definitely Yes! is a good sample of good Canadian hip hop.

En esta ocasion una sorpresa Mexicana, bueno con raices mexicanas que ha hecho una excelente carrera en el Pais del Norte, me refiero a Lasha de Sela.

Lasha de Sela también conocida simplemente como Lhasa, es una cantante y compositora México-americana que fue criada tanto en México como en los Estados Unidos y ahora divide su tiempo entre Canadá y Francia.

Lhasa nació en Big India, New York, su padre es un escritor y profesor de español mexicano, su madre es una fotógrafa estadounidense. Viajó de niña por distintos lugares de Norteamérica y a los 13 años cantaba en cafés de San Francisco. A los 19 años se mudo a Montreal en Canadá y canto por 5 años en bares, donde desarrollo el material que eventualmente se convertiría en su primer álbum, La Llorona que salió en 1997, gracias a ese disco gano el Premio Canadiense Juno para Mejor artista Global, esto en el año 1998. Despues de algunos años de estar de tour alrededor de Europa volvio a Montreal para producir su segundo álbum, The Living Road, que incluyo canciones en Ingles, Francés y Español (mientras que La Llorona esta enteramente cantada en Español).

Su tercer Album titulado Lhasa fue lanzado en Abril del 2009 en todo Canadá y Europa. En esta ocasión esta todo en Ingles y como en sus previos discos el álbum es maravilloso, de cierta manera muy clásico, como una mezcla de blues folk, jazz y country. Realmente impactante, No es un disco que le guste a algunos pero es altamente recomendable.

This ocassion a Mexican Surprise, well a singer with Mexican roots and with a excelent career in Canada, Im talking about Lhasa de Sela.

Lahsa de Sela also known as simply Lhasa, is a Mexican American singer and songwriter who was raised in Mexico and the United States and now she divides her time between Canada and France.

Lhasa was born in Big Indian, New York, of a Mexican father and an American mother.At age nineteen she moved to Montreal in Canada, and sang for five years in bars, where she developed the material that eventually became her first album, La Llorona, released in 1997. thanks to that record she won the Canadian Juno Award for Best Global Artist, in 1998. After some years touring across Europe she returned to Montreal to produce her second album, The Living Road, that included songs in English, French and Spanish. (While La Llorona had been entirely in Spanish).

Her third album Lhasa was released in April 2009 in Canada and Europe. This ocassion is all in english, and like her previous records the album is wonderful, very clasic in some kind of way, like a mix of blues folk, jazz and country. It really shocks, not a album for some people but highly recommend.

Martha Wainwright (nacida el 8 de Mayo del 76) es una cantante y compositora de folk-rock, ella es Americo-canadiense y ademas es la hija del musico de Folk/blues Loudon Wainwright III y la cantante de folk Kate McGarrigle (como ven la musica la tiene en las venas). Junto a su hermano mayor, Rufus Wainwright (les suena?) fue criada en Montreal, en una casa con un ambiente totalmente lleno de musica que le sirvio para desarrollar su creatividad musical.

El estilo de Wainwright ha sido describido como una mezcla de Folk, rock, country y cantos Chanson (Chanson es un término francés, que en español se refiere a cualquier canción con letra en francés y, más específicamente, a piezas vocales de tema amoroso, y también a las de crítica social y política, en particular las pertenecientes al estilo de los cabarets. En este contexto se llama chansonnier al intérprete de canciones de carácter humorístico o satírico.) La inspiracion Folk viene naturalmente y sin esfuerzo minimo por que Wainwright nacio dentro de una familia de musicos de folk.

Martha Wainwright (born May 8, 1976) is a Canadian-American folk-rock singer-songwriter. She is the daughter of American folk/blues musician Loudon Wainwright III and Canadian folk singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle. Along with her older brother, Rufus Wainwright, Martha was raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in a musically fueled household, an environment which helped nurture her musical creativity.

Wainwright's style has been described as a melding of folk, rock, country, and chanson singing. (A chanson is in general any lyric-driven French song, usually polyphonic and secular. A singer specializing in chansons is known as a "chanteur"; a collection of chansons, especially from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, is also known as a chansonnier.) The folk inspirations comes naturally and inescapably to Wainwright, as she was born into a family of folk musicians.

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too her recent album, is a 14-track album features 12 original tracks and cover versions of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and, as a bonus track in some countries, the Eurythmics' "Love is a Stranger". Women son de Calgary y a pesar de aparentar ser una banda joven, ya han hecho tours alrededor de Canadá, Estados Unidos y Europa, y ademas han sido elogiados por Pitchfork y tambien por la blogoesfera por su álbum debut producido por Chad VanGaalen. Los miembros han estado en otras bandas desde que eran adolescentes y como resultado los cuatro son capaces de lograr un denso noise experimental y instrumentación intrincada, con una delicada escritura melódica sin ningún problema alguno.

Su álbum debut fue grabado por su amigo de disquera, el mismo Chad VanGaalen durante 4 meses y usaron Ghettoblaster (grabadoras gigantes de los 80´s) y viejas cintas en el departamento de VanGaalen, también en exteriores. Quizás por eso es que el álbum suena totalmente orgánico y con muchas texturas. Un trabajo totalmente conceptual.

Despite their apparent youth as a band, Women have already toured across Canada, the US and Europe, and have been celebrated by Pitchfork and across the blogosphere for their Chad VanGaalen-produced debut recording. The members have been in bands together since childhood, and as a result the foursome is able to marry dense experimental noise and intricate instrumentation with delicate, melodic songwriting in a seemingly effortless manner.

The debut album by Women was recorded by label-mate Chad VanGaalen over 4 months on ghettoblasters and old tape machines in his basement, and also in outdoors. Maybe thats because the album sounds so organic and with many textures. A debut album totally conceptual.

Una vez mas estoy feliz por presentarles una banda que es de mis favoritas, ellos son Hey Rosetta! un grupo de St.John en la provincia de Newfoundland and Labrador y que de hecho es el unico grupo de dicho lugar en estar nominado por su album Into your lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood)por asi decirlo es la sorpresa de la lista.

El sexteto esta compuesto por Tim Baker (vocales, piano, guitarra y la mente detrás del proyecto), Adam Hogan (guitarra), Josh Ward (Bajo), Phil Maloney (batería), Erin Aurich o Kinley Dowling (violín) y Romesh Thavanathan (cello).

Conceptualmente el nuevo disco es una transición de el trabajo anterior de Tim las cuales eran composiciones escritas en la soledad de su cuarto y ahora son en la profundidad y el espacio que viene de vivir en la carretera de tour con su banda. Impulsado por Tim después de regresar a su casa en St.John, Hey Rosetta! rápidamente floreció y creció de presentarse en bares en la calle George a presentaciones en festivales como el Junofest, los ECMA´s, la Semana Musical Canadiense (CMW) y el NXNE (la version del norte del SouthbySouthWest) ademas de haber ganado cuatro Premios MusicNL y estar nominado a un par de ECMA.

Once again Im happy to introduce you one of my favorites bands, they are Hey Rosetta! a group from St.John on the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, actually is the only group from there in been nomine for their album Into your lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood). They are the surprise of the list.

The six-piece group is comprised of Tim Baker (vocals/piano/guitar the mastermind of the band), Adam Hogan (guitar), Josh Ward (bass), Phil Maloney (drums), Erin Aurich or Kinley Dowling (violin), and Romesh Thavanathan (cello).

Conceptually, the new record is a shift from Tim's earlier compositions often written in isolation within his bedroom, to a new depth and space that comes from experiencing life on the road as a touring band. Seeded by Tim after returning home to St. John’s in 2005, Hey Rosetta! quickly bloomed and grew from bars on George Street to showcases at Junofest, ECMAs, CMW & NXNE, along the way winning four MusicNL Awards and a couple ECMA nominations.

En esta ocasion les presento la ultima sensacion de la prensa especializada, el duo de garage rock de Vancouver: Japandroids o como en ocasiones ellos escriben JPNDRDS (supongo que una burla o chiste a MSTRKRFT) el nombre vino de otras dos propuestas de nombre: Japanese Scream y Pleasure Droids.

Japandroids fue formado en 2006 y esta compuesto por Brian King en la guitarra y David Prowse en la bateria, los dos se conocieron en la universidad, originalmente se planeaba formar un trio pero decidieron olvidar tener un lider en especifico y ambos cantan. La banda saco dos ediciones EP edicion limitada el primero es All Lies del 2007 y Lullaby Death Jams del 2008, su album debut y por el cual han llamado la atencion de los medios es Post-Nothing que fue lanzado a mediados del 2009. Despues de eso fueron firmados en Polyvinil Records. De hecho su disco debut solo se puede conseguir en Vinyl y digital, no CD pero eventualmente lo habra.

A la banda no le importa como le llames a su genero, mientras no sea minimal todo esta bien. Japandroids son potentes un duo que pretende sonar como una banda de cinco integrantes. Y como mencionan en su Myspace apoyarlos te lleva al cielo. Sin preguntar. Escuchenlos!

This occasion I present to you the great sensation in all the musical media, a duo of garage rock from Vancouver: Japandroids or like they occasionally spell it without vowels, as JPNDRDS. ( I suppose is some kind of mock or joke to MSTRKRFT) the

name came from two other band name ideas: Japanese Scream and Pleasure Droids.

Japandroids was formed in 2006, and is comprised of Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums. The two met at the University of Victoria, originally intending to be a trio, they decided to forgo having a specific lead singer and share vocal duties. The band self-released two limited edition EPs, 2007's All Lies and 2008's Lullaby Death Jams. Their debut LP; Post-Nothing was released mid-2009. They were subsequently signed to Polyvinyl Records. You can only find their debut album on Vinyl of Digital formats. No compact discs but eventually will be.

the band don´t care what you call it, as long as it´s not minimal. Japandroids are maximal - a two piece band trying to sound like a five piece band. And as they mentioned in their myspace, supporting japandroids gets you into heaven - No question asked-

Pink Mountaintops de Vancouver, es otro de los proyectos de Stephen McBean líder del colectivo/banda Black Mountain. El estilo musical se asemeja al de la otra banda pero con un lado mas psicodélico y experimental con complicadas líricas y melodías mas suaves. La banda como tal lleva tres discos siendo Outside Love el mas reciente y por el cual ha sido nominado.

No hay mucha informacion referente así que es todo lo que puedo decirles de este grupo. Escuchenlo. Yo lo hice y quede impactado por la variedad de instrumentos y pues por todo en general. No es malo pero como lo mencionan es bastante psicodélico. Lo cual lo hace mas interesante.

Pink Mountaintops from Vancouver, is Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean’s side project. The music resembles the style of Black Mountain but has a more psychedelic and experimental side with mellow tunes and complicated lyrics. The band has three albums and with their recent one, Outside Love has been nominated for the Polaris.

There is no much information about, so it´s all I can say about them. Listen it. I did and I was stunned for all the instrumentation and everything else. It's not a bad record but as their mentioned is pretty psychedelic. And thanks to that is an interesting album.

Liricamente el album es el mas revelante hasta la fecha, Su voz recorre las carreteras desde el Yukon hasta Newfoundland, cantando de ballenas que se han perdido, de lobos e nuestras imaginaciones, los grandes lagos, bailando con osos grizzlys y mas fascinantes temas.

Musicalmente el cruza nuevos territorios desde el arte folk, el indie-rock, el electronico/experimental y el noise. Empezando en Europa influenciado en cambiar su banjo por una computadora y su guitarra acustica por una electrica. superioryouareinferior es un album que en estos tiempos no se estanca en un solo genero pero mantiene el respecto de Rae por una buena escritura en sus canciones y sus raices folks que mantienen conectada a la audiencia.

Rae Spoon was born on Calgary Alberta. In his early twenties he hit the road as one of the world’s only transgender country singers and toured Canada, Europe, Australia and the USA. When the obvious dangers and contradictions of this role caught up to him he hid in a small town in Eastern Germany for a winter. There he was inspired to write an album about his darker experiences of Canada and it’s highways.

superioryouareinferior is Rae’s fourth solo album, and his first in over two years. Lyrically the album is his most revealing to date. His voice walks the highways from the Yukon to Newfoundland singing of whales that have gotten lost, the wolves in our imaginations, the Great Lakes, dancing with grizzlies and more fascinanting issues.

Musically he traverses new territories from art folk, to indie-rock, to electronic/experimental and noise. Tratar de describir a este dueto de Montreal es algo difícil de hacer, han sido describidos como "un proyecto experimental de hip hop lleno del estilo trip-hop-down-tempo, electronico y guitarras agresivas con beats fuerte de baterías" o "trip rock". Pero no es sorprender ya que dos figuras importantes forman a Beast, la primera es Jean-Philippe Goncalves percusionista y productor musical con una amplia carrera y la otra mitad es la grandiosa Betty Bonifassi, cantante de jazz, blues de cabaret y ahora electrónica, como dato extra Bonifassi participo en el film Les triplettes de Belleville con la canción principal (Belleville Rendez-vous) y gracias a eso actúo en la 76 ceremonia de entrega de los oscares con dicha canción. el vídeo aqui -click-

Yo no conocía al dueto pero al escuchar su disco debut e investigar sobre ellos descubrí que realmente es increíble lo que hacen. De hecho cuando empezaron a hacer la música, ellos dos no tenian idea de lo que hacian y el resultado es un disco bastante adictivo. Una agradable sorpresa. Al seguir leyendo sobre el dueto, Bonifassi dice "quería cantar algo líricamente rico y poderoso".

El album debut homonimo salio internacionalmente en Itunes en noviembre y el primer sencillo "Mr Hurricane" se lanzo gratuitamente en Itunes. Por cierto que esta copia que conseguí tiene algunas partes mudas en alguno de los tracks, no duran mucho pero si molestan ligeramente, en cuanto tenga una mejor copia la reemplazare, por lo pronto disfruten esta joya.

To try to describe this duet from Montreal is something hard to do, they have been described as "an experimental hip-hop project filled with trip-hop-style down-tempo electronic, aggressive guitars and loud drum beats" or "trip rock" But is not a surprise, because two important persons form Beast, the first one is Jean-Philippe Goncalves percussionist and record producer with a huge musical history and the other half is Betty Bonifassi, singer of jazz, cabaret blues and electronic. I did not know the duet but at the moment of listen to their debut album and searching about them, I found that is incredible what they do. In fact when they started doing it. They had no idea either of what were doing, and the result is one addictive cd, A very amazing surprise. When I continue reading about them, Bonifassi says “I really wanted to sing something lyrically rich and powerful.”

Beast’s self-titled debut album was made available internationally on iTunes on Nov 4, 2008 and their first single, "Mr. Hurricane", was offered for free on iTunes. BTW this copy I get has some errors on some tracks, they do not last to long but they are annoying, as soon I found a better copy I will change it, for the moment, enjoy this.

Que les puedo decir acerca de Fucked Up? realmente es una de las bandas mas impactantes y poderosas en vivo. Quizás se deba a Pink Eyes (también conocido como Mr. Damian) el vocalista principal de la banda, un chico de 300 lbs de peso, quien deja toda su energía en cada acto que la banda hace. Su estilo de música es un hardcore experimental y fue formada en Toronto Ontario.

La historia de la banda esta llena de controversia, desde una enorme discográfica de Sencillos (cada uno con una o dos canciones) hasta el hecho de que mucha gente sospechaba de las intenciones de la banda, basados en las alusiones de control mental, fascismo, ocultismo del siglo 20 y misticismo Nazi. pero no todo es malo en la historia del grupo, hay algunas cosas buena, el álbum doble Hidden World (2006) recibió reseñas positivas en Pitchfork media, SPIN magazine y NOW Magazine. El álbum fue seleccionado como "álbum punk numero uno del año" por la aclamada revista Canadiense Exclaim! y fue bien recibido por la comunidad musical.

What can I tell you about Fucked Up? Truly is one of the most shocking and powerful live acts ever. Maybe that`s because of Pink eyes (also known as Mr. Damian) the lead vocalist of the band, a guy of 300 lbs who leaves all his energy in every performance the band make. The band was formed in Toronto, Ontario and their music style is an experimental hardcore.

The history of the band is full of controversy, from a long discography of 7" and 12" Ep´s (each with one or two songs) to the fact that many people became suspicious of the band’s intentions, based on their allusions to mind control, fascism, early 20th century occultism, and Nazi mysticism. But not everything is bad in the history of the group, there are some good things, the double album Hidden World (2006) received positive reviews from Pitchfork media, SPIN magazine, and NOW Magazine. The album was also picked as “1 punk album of the year” by the Canadian magazine Exclaim! and was generally well received in the music community. Also, Owen Pallett (commonly known as Final Fantasy) did the strings for the album, and Alexisonfire’s vocalist George Pettit made an appearance as a guest vocalist on the final track. The album served as Fucked Up’s “major label debut”.

This time the band has been nominate to the Polaris for his album The Chemistry of Common Life one of the best punk albums of 2008. so...I dont have to tell you more about this band. LISTEN IT NOW!

Cœur De Pirate es el nombre del proyecto musical de Béatrice Martin una chica de 19 años originaria de Montreal, su música es sencilla y bastante linda, en pocas palabras es Pop pero bien hecho, algunos la han catalogado como la "nueva" Feist algo que considero una locura, pero siendo sinceros su álbum debut es bastante bueno.

Martin toca el piano desde la edad de tres, y después de cinco años de educación musical empieza a componer sus propias canciones. Los miembros de Bonjour Brumaire se dieron cuenta de su habilidad y la invitaron para formar parte del grupo como tecladista y vocalista, tiempo después Beatrice deja el grupo para enfocarse en Coeur de Pirate, con tan solo cuatros conciertos en su haber, Coeur de Pirate lentamente se ha popularizado en Myspace y ahora con su recien nominacion en los Polaris, Beatrice es una chica a quien tomar en cuenta.

Coueur de Pirate is the name of the musical project of Beatrice Martin a 19 year old girl from Montreal, her music is pretty simple and very cute, in a few words is Pop but is very well done, some people had label her as the "new" Feist, something that I consider a little bit crazy, but to be honest her debut album is pretty amazing.

Members of Bonjour Brumaire noticed her and asked her to join their group as singer and keyboardist. After that she left the band to concentrate on Coeur de Pirate. With only four concerts to its credit, Coeur de Pirate has gotten its fame mainly on Myspace and now with her nomination to the Polaris, Beatrice is something we have to had in mind.

Disculpen la tardanza pero andaba en el funeral de MJ pero ya todo esta normal, continuo con la labor de poner a todos los nominados de los Polaris Music Prize, en esta ocasion estoy orgulloso de presentarles a uno de los mejores nuevos artistas este año; Bruce Peninsula.

Bruce Peninsula son diez amigos de Toronto haciendo canciones sagradas y cantos del mar (como ellos dicen en su myspace) pero la banda empezo con Misha Bower y Matt Cully en el verano del 2006. Bruce Peninsula lentamente ha mutado, tomando un nuevo giro cada que un nuevo miembro o instrumento es añadido a la mezcla.

La banda ha pasado el ultimo año viajando atraves de iglesias y callejones para crear A mountain is A mouth, su album Debut, y dejenme les digo que el disco es ASOMBROSO! me recuerda a Arcade Fire (obvio) y quiza, a algun grupo viejo de gospel. No puedo describir que excelente es este disco, tiene que escucharlo.

Sorry for the late I was attending at MJ funeral but now everything is ok, I continue with the task of putting all the nominees for the Polaris Music Prize, in this occasion I am glad to introduce you one of the best new artists of this year; Bruce Peninsula.

Bruce Peninsula are ten friends from Toronto making sacred songs and sea shanties (like they say in their myspace) but the band started with Misha Bower and Matt Cully in the summer of 2006. Bruce Peninsula has slowly mutated, taking a new turn every time a new member or instrument is added to the mix.

The Band have spent the last year travelling through churches and slums to make A Mountain Is A Mouth, their forthcoming debut LP. And let me tell you that this cd is AWESOME! it reminds me of Arcade Fire (obvious) and maybe,a some old gospel group. I can´t describe how Excellent is this record, you have to listen it.

Bison BC son de Vancouver, ellos describen su musica como: "si tu corazon estuviera explotando en tu pecho", con miembros de otras bandas de metal importante ellos decidieron formar Bison BC, despues de que su album debut Earthbound capturara su sonido masivo y brutal en cinta, se ganaron reconocimiento internacional y un contrato con Metal Blade Records

Recientemente terminaron de grabar su debut con la disquera Metal Blade, Quiet Earth, el cual muestra el sonido aplastante caracteristico de la banda, este fue lanzado el 30 de septiembre del 2008. Definifitivamente es una banda para fans del Doom, Stoner rock, sludge y el buen y refinado old heavy metal.

Great Lake Swimmer son 5 chicos (y una chica) de Toronto, ellos se formaron en el 2003 y hacen un indie folk. Su cuarto álbum se titula Lost Channels y fue lanzado el 31 de Marzo, la banda esta recibiendo mas atención alrededor de Norte América y Europa, adoptando nuevos seguidores a la banda gracias a la inolvidable voz de Deller´s y sus letras.

Lost Channels fue un éxito en Canadá sin ningún problema: Great lake Swimmers siempre han sido uno de esos grupos favoritos que se recomiendan de boca en boca y el éxito a gran escala era inevitable, ahora son considerados como "tesoro nacional" por la CBC, la productora televisiva del país.

Arkells es una de mis bandas favoritas en los ultimos dias, ellos son de Hamilton, Ontario su estilo es algo de rock pero sin ser repetitivo, su album debut se titula Jackson Square y salio en Octubre del 2008. Ellos iniciaron en el 2006, al año siguiente fue cuando grabaron Deadlines un EP de seis canciones el cual mostro el rock blues con una mezcla de rock moderno, como lo menciona “Springsteenesque” rock (referencia a Bruce Springsteen).

Desde la salida de Deadlines han viajado alrededor de Canada haciendose de mas adeptos y fans y compartiendo el escenario con varias bandas importantes. Sin duda este grupo vale la pena tenerlo en la mira, su futuro es prometedor.

Arkells is ona of my favorite bands in the last days, they are from Hamilton, Ontario, and they played something like rock but is not like the usual one, their debut album it´s called Jackson Square and it was release on October 2008. Arkells started in 2006 the following year recorded their debut EP called Deadlines, six songs on that EP showcasesh the rock blues style blending of modern rock and a "Springsteensque" rock.

Since the release of Deadlines the band has traveled across Canada, gaining more fans and sharing stages with importants bands, Without a doubt this group deserves more attention because they have a bright future ahead.
