Bendecida con un delicado pero potente sonido que recuerda a artistas como Norah Jones o Madeleine Peyroux; Emma-Lee es oriunda de Toronto, Ontario, su album debut se titula Never Just A Dream el cual salio en el 2009 y desde entonces poco a poco ha ido ganando popularidad entre prensa de su ciudad y con la gente. Los dulces tonos de su voz y la vibra melosa para iniciar pero lo que te mantiene escuchando son las conciensudas letras empalmadas con el estilo de Emma.

Los Fans del jazz apreciaran los sonidos dulces del album. That Sinking Feeling, Jealousy, y Mr. Buttonlip (su primer sencillo) son canciones mas ritmicas y movidas pero que mantienen la linea que la canadiense ha formado.

Jazz, soul de los 50´s y un moderno sonido de canta-autor es lo que les espera al escucharlos, segun la prensa Emma esta destinada para grandes cosas en el futuro, espermos que asi sea.

This ability to sing on the razor’s edge of stability (of tone, vibe and rhythm) is a true talent, and something for which Emma-Lee has a bit of a knack. Fans of Norah Jones and her ilk will appreciate the sweetness and lyricism of this album, but will soon find themselves sucked deeper in by modern lyrics set to wicked grooves. You may find yourself dancing around your living room – slow dancing (with a real live partner or a broom, your choice) to the leisurely tracks, and bopping your head and shimmying your hips to the upbeat songs.

Emma-Lee shines brightest on those upbeat numbers, like That Sinking Feeling, Jealousy, and Mr. Buttonlip. Some of the mellower tracks, like the slow and bluesy Older Man, can seem to drag at five minutes or longer, but the lyricism of these slower songs is not to be discounted.

Flotilla

Flotilla es un cuarteto de Montreal compuesto por Veronica Charnley quien hace voz y guitarras principales, su esposo Geof Holbrok quien toca el bajo, teclados y electronicos, Eveline Gregoire-Rosseasu encargada de la arpa y en la bateria Benoit Moniere. Pero ademas hay una mezcla y arreglo de varios instrumentos mas que muestran el talento de la banda.

Quizas lo que mas destaca en ese album es la preciosa voz de Veronica que hace que siga siendo pop pero que no intenta ser algo mainstream, es mas inocente y honesto por asi decirlo, tambien la letras son parte fundamental del ambiente del grupo, canciones como: Charlie Im Through, A Thousand Jacobs y con la que abre el disco Song for Yannick demuestran esa versatilidad por parte de Veronica, la cual actua como una excelente Fron-woman y nunca quitandole poder a la musica.

Su segundo disco se titula "One Hundred Words for Water" y salio por Julio del año pasado, asi como sus compañeros de ciudad Land of Talk, Flotilla presenta canciones de Dream pop , quizas la inmediata similitud es con la banda americana Death Cab for Cutie pero las atmosferas y ritmos que incluyen van desde el folk, el jazz, el funk.

Flotilla es una de esas bandas a las cuales uno debe de estar atento porque sin duda daran de que hablar en el pais del norte.

Flotilla which consists of Veronica herself: vocals, guitar, Geof Holbrook (her husband): bass, keyboards, electronics, vocals, Eveline Grégoire-Rousseau: harp and Benoit Monière : drums.

Veronica’s vocals bend and shift to mirror the textures the band creates. Even when the listen is refreshed by the spiked tempo of Clouds and the funky bridge of Charlie, I’m Through, she holds her own, acting as a front woman but never overpowering the music. Pitching a sound that includes folk, jazz, funk, atmospherics, minimal electronics and harp isn’t really an easy sell or one that can be described quickly.

One Hundred Words For Water is not your standard indie rock record and in today's cookie cutter world, that's terrific.

Después de otro (si, otro) break retomamos el camino del blog y ahora lo haremos con bandas con un estilo único y una experimentación única o por lo menos que no se ve muy seguido, la primera de ellas es originaria de Montreal y que describe su propio genero como "moog rock" me refiero a Duchess Says.

La banda fue creada en el 2003 por miembros de Church of Budgerigars y consiste de cuatro individuos, quienes son Annie-Claude que es la vocalista y guitarrista, el tecladista y también guitarrista Ismael, en el Bajo Phil y como percusiones Simon Says. Ellos se han hecho nombre atraves de las radiodifusoras independientes del pais del norte en especial por la CBC Radio 3 (que es donde se programa todo lo independiente) una de sus canciones fue utilizada en el film protagonizado por Ellen Page; "The Tracey Fragments" y que gracias a eso han actuado en festivales como el Eurockeennes y el Osheaga Festival.

Su mas reciente álbum es Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs es una vertiente de estilos que pasan del punk al electrónico a la experimentación pero siempre manteniendo la linea de lo irracional y el frenesí. Sus influencias cubren un amplio rango de géneros desde el no wave, new wave como los anteriormente mencionados todo esto fusionado en sus caóticas presentaciones en vivo donde los visuales son parte primordial de su acto.

Nada que un buen grupo que los pondrá a bailar en este inicio de fin de semana.

Duchess Says is a Canadian dance punk band from Montreal. The band describes its own genre as "moog rock".

The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Annie-Claude, keyboardist and guitarist Ismael, guitarist and bassist Phil and percussionist Simon Says. They have been playlisted on CBC Radio 3 and Bande à part, been featured in the soundtrack from the film "The Tracey Fragments," and have performed at Eurockéennes and the Osheaga Festival.

Duchess Says was created in late 2003 by four influent members of the Church of Budgerigars who decided to collaborate together in a common musical project. Their goal was to insure a faithful representation of the message of the Duchess (or spiritual budgie) through a precise artistic dialog. Composed of A-Claude (vox, keytar, guit, programmations), Ismael (keyboard,guitar, programmations), Phil (guitar, bass,feedbacks) and Simon Says (lo-fi beats, drums and doubtful noises). Duchess Says is serving us a repertory of "moog rock" songs strong in images and enormoustly intense live performances!Their musical influences range from no wave, new wave, punk, to cinema and visual arts. If you pay attention, you could see them perform in the most unusual places such as golf courses, shop windows, vacant building sites etc.. Duchess Says has the mandate to decontextualise the rock and to promote simultaneously their Church on the way.

Continuando nuestro pequeño recorrido por los colectivos Canadienses ahora nos vamos de regreso a Ontario pero ahora a Kingston, con un grupo realmente nuevo pero pero que si nos llega a sorprender por la melancolia y calidad folk de su musica. Ellos son The Gertrudes con su reciente (y realmente es reciente porque salio este 7 de Agosto) EP llamado Hard Water.

La banda esta formada por 12 personas y usan varios instrumentos musicales pero quizas el mas atractivo y llamativo sea el Banjo tocado por Annie Clifford quien junto a Greg Tilson (vocalista) formaron a la banda gracias a un sueño que tuvo Annie. El resto fue sencillo y con el tiempo sacaron un EP homonimo de 4 canciones ya para este año Hard Water sale a la venta y le ha ido bastante bien con la critica local.

The Gertrudes suenan como un viejo saloon con mucha influencia folk y a pesar de que son 12 los que tocan en ningun momento se siente saturado de instrumentos, cada uno va donde debe de ir y a su tiempo, si tuviera que buscar una descripcion simplona seria como una orquesta folk. Ellos han producido un EP que es al mismo tiempo innovador y longevo. Su sonido esta simentado en la tradiciones folk pero filtrado atraves de su creatividad y talento, se podria decir que toman sus melodias folks a maravillosos e inesperados lugares.

Espero lo disfruten y sobretodo les guste el track final que es una entrevista telefonica con Annie y donde ademas interpreta una version de Kansas con su banjo.

Now we go to Kingston, Ontario with a new group that is really amazing and melancolic thats because of their style and their music. They are The Gertrudes with their recent (it is truly recent because was release august 7th) Ep called Hard Water.

The band quite simply came to be when Banjo Picking Annie told Guitar Picking Greg of a dream she had of a Gertrude. the rest is history. After that they record a self-titled EP and then their newest EP. Despite having 12 members in the band, there is no jostling to be heard. Each instrument is used to its best effect, showing up when needed and retreating when not.

The Gertrudes sound like an ol’ time saloon party in deep space… experimental noise beds with down home folk passengers, frolicking through original material, played by a veritable orchestra of instruments. They have produced an EP that is at the same time timeless and innovative. Their sound is rooted in folk tradition but, through their creativity and talent, they take their folky tunes into wonderful, unexpected places.

I hope you enjoy it, especially the last track that is a Radio interview with Annie and a solo Banjo version of "Kansas".

Tom Fun Orchestra

Tom Fun Orchestra es otro colectivo pero de Sydney, Nova Scotia. Si en la entrada anterior el distintivo del grupo era un estilo como de coro de iglesia el de esta banda es como de una cantina llena de amigos y todo bebiendo run y tequila. La banda contiene una mezcla de instrumentos electricos y acusticos que incluyen desde el violin, el banjo y el acordeon hasta guitarras electricas,baterias y sampleos.

El sonido es similar, mas no igual a bandas como the Clash, the Pogues y a the Arcade Fire y Broken social Scene pero quizas la mayor similitud es con Tom Waits ya que la voz de Ian MacDougall (el vocalista y escritor) tiene similitud con la de Waits.

La banda fue formada en el 2005 por el mismo Ian y durante un tiempo estuvieron actuando en diferentes partes de su natal Nova Scotia y despues se embarcaron en una gira por Irlanda y el Reino Unido, su album debut titulado You Will Land with a Thud fue grabado con Gordon Gano quien es el vocalista y guitarrista del legendario grupo Violent Femmes por lo cual le dio una calidad y sello unico. Para el 2008, año en que salio su disco debut la banda gano premios en los 2008 Music Nova Scotia Awards por mejor Entertainer of the Year y Galaxy Rising Star que en si seria traducido como mejor show en vivo y artista nuevo.

Y si. La parte divertida es cuando se ven a estas 9 personas en el escenario cantando y divirtiendose como si estuvieran en alguna cantina o en alguna fiesta. Recordando al viejo Tom, y no me refiero a Tom Waits sino a la persona por la cual tienen este nombre y si uds. quieren saber de que me refiero tendran que esuchar el disco y quizas visitar la pagina oficial de este interesente grupo.

The Tom Fun Orchestra is an indie rock ensemble from Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. The band features an unconventional mix of electric and acoustic instruments, including violin, banjo, accordion, trumpet, double bass, electric guitars and drums. With a sound that has elicited references ranging from The Clash, Tom Waits and The Pogues to The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, The Tom Fun Orchestra combines elements of folk, roots, blues, rock and punk to create a sound that is at once familiar yet entirely unique .

The Tom Fun Orchestra was formed in 2005 by singer-songwriter Ian MacDougall. They have performed all over Central and Eastern Canada and toured throughout Ireland and the UK. The band recorded their debut album, You Will Land with a Thud, with Violent Femmes singer-guitarist Gordon Gano and record producer Warren Bruleigh. It was mixed by Phil Palazzola and mastered by Howie Weinberg and released January 29, 2008 on Company House Records (EMI Music Canada). At the 2008 Music Nova Scotia Awards, The Tom Fun Orchestra won awards for Entertainer of the Year and Galaxy Rising Star. In March, 2009, the band received its first East Coast Music Award with the ECMA Galaxy Rising Star Award.

The Fun part is when you see this 9 people on stage, having fun if like they were in some pub or a party remember their good old friend Tom, and Im not talking about Tom Waits, I´m talkin about the person from who their took their band name, and if you want to know who is he, you´ll have to listen the record and probably gives them a visit the official Webpage of this amazing band.

Después de un rato de descanso, regresamos con una nueva tanda de discos, en esta ocasión nos enfocaremos en algo que es característico de los canadienses y es la formación de colectivos o de agrupaciones con un alto numero de integrantes, existen varias pero hoy les traigo a The Choir Practice originarios de Vancouver.

El grupo es formado originalmente por Coco Culbertson miembro de The Gay y por Shane Turner quien es a su vez miembro de Love and Mathematics los demás integrantes son Larissa Loyva (P:ano y de su proyecto en solitario Kellarissa), Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida y The Buttless Chap), Jenn Chycoski, Chris Kelly, Skat-T, Karin Bubas, Shira Blustein (Blood Meridian), Sidney Vermont (Hello Blue Roses), Naomi Nepham, Marcy Emery (Heartbreaker Scene), Kurt Dahle (Limblifter y The New Pornographers), Olivia Fetherstonghaugh y Kristen Halliday. Cada uno de ellos pone una parte a esta agrupación. El estilo es pop pero con un estilo coral (de ahí el nombre) y tal cual parece como si escucharas un coro de iglesia, de hecho la idea y fue originalmente formado como una excusa para beber vino y juntarse con los amigos.

Ellos lanzaron su álbum debut con Mint Records (de donde son la mayoría de los grupos de los integrantes) el 15 de Mayo del 2007 y atrajeron buena parte de los medios cuando Jarvis Cocker los eligió para que abrieran su fecha en Vancouver.

El Album incluye una versión de Failsafe de Carl Newman (The New Pornographers y A.C. Newman) la cual fue grabada y lanzada muchos meses antes que Carl lanzara su versión en el álbum Challengers de The New Pornographers, entonces si mucho preámbulo aquí les dejo esta joya o en su defecto joyas de músicos.

Faunts es una banda de indie rock de Edmonton, formados en el 2000 por los hermanos Steve y Tim Batke. En el 2005 despues de estar en el ambito indie local de Alberta firman con Friendly Fire Records y en el 2005 sale su album debut High Expectations/Low Results que fue bien recibido. Un año despues lanzan un EP de 40 min. titulado M4, de ese mismo EP una cancion fue incluida en el juego RPG Mass Effect y gracias a esto la popularidad de la banda se incremento y una nueva audiencia conocio el mood, y las melodias de la banda.

Despues de sacar un disco de Remixes en febrero del 2009 sale su nuevo album titulado Feel.Love.Thinking.Of el cual fue resultado de estar de gira por Estados Unidos, actualmente se encuentra de gira nuevamente por Estados Unidos y parte de Canada.

Faunts is an Indie rock band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, formed in the fall of 2000 by two brothers, Steve and Tim Batke. Faunts are released on Friendly Fire Recordings. In 2005, their debut album High Expectations/Low Results was well-received. In 2006, a 40-minute EP entitled M4 was released, after that one of the tracks from the M4 EP was featured during the final credits of Bioware's immensely successful 2007 RPG Mass Effect, This immediately raised the band's profile and "a sizeable new audience was exposed to Faunts’ moody, subdued melodies".

After their released of a remix album titled Faunts Remixed, their new album Feel.Love.Thinking.Of was released on February 17th, 2009, and is the result of songwriting over the course of the touring across America and Canada and they are on tour again.
